Program Overview

Both nSuns and Wendler 5/3/1 are proven strength training programs that have helped thousands of lifters achieve their goals. However, they approach strength development from different angles.

Wendler 5/3/1

Wendler 5/3/1 is a periodized program created by Jim Wendler that uses a four-week cycle with varying rep ranges (5s, 3s, and 1s). The program emphasizes consistency, recovery, and sustainable long-term progress. It's known for being relatively simple to follow and highly customizable through different variations and accessory schemes.

nSuns Linear Progression

nSuns is a high-volume, high-frequency linear progression program created by a Reddit user known as "nSuns." The program features multiple daily maxes (different max attempts each day) and constant daily progression. It's designed for lifters who want rapid strength gains and don't mind higher training volume.

Program Structure

5/3/1 Structure

5/3/1 operates on a four-week mesocycle with a deload week. Each week focuses on a different rep range:

  • Week 1: 5 reps at 65%, 75%, 85% of training max
  • Week 2: 3 reps at 70%, 80%, 90% of training max
  • Week 3: 1 rep at 75%, 85%, 95% of training max
  • Week 4: Deload at 40%, 50%, 60% of training max

nSuns Structure

nSuns typically uses a 4-day, 5-day, or 6-day split with multiple daily maxes. For example, the 4-day version includes:

  • Day 1: Bench Press focus with multiple daily maxes
  • Day 2: Squat focus with multiple daily maxes
  • Day 3: Overhead Press focus with multiple daily maxes
  • Day 4: Deadlift focus with multiple daily maxes

Progression Methods

5/3/1 Progression

5/3/1 uses linear progression on a cycle basis. After completing a four-week cycle, you increase your training max by 5 lbs (upper body) or 10 lbs (lower body) and start a new cycle. This creates predictable, sustainable progress.

nSuns Progression

nSuns uses daily progression. You attempt to add weight to your lifts every single session. This creates rapid initial progress but can lead to plateaus and requires excellent recovery and nutrition.

Training Volume

5/3/1 Volume

5/3/1 is relatively moderate in volume. The main work typically consists of 9 sets per lift per week (3 sets × 3 days for most variations). Accessories add additional volume, but the total is manageable for most lifters.

nSuns Volume

nSuns is high-volume. Each session includes multiple daily maxes plus accessory work, resulting in 20-30+ sets per session. This high volume drives rapid muscle growth and strength gains but requires excellent recovery.

Training Frequency

5/3/1 Frequency

5/3/1 is typically 4 days per week (one day per main lift), though 3-day and 2-day variations exist. This lower frequency allows for better recovery and is ideal for lifters with busy schedules or limited recovery capacity.

nSuns Frequency

nSuns is 4-6 days per week depending on the variation. The high frequency allows for more practice with heavy weights and rapid skill development, but requires excellent recovery and nutrition.

The Hybrid Approach

Many advanced lifters use 5/3/1 as their main program but add nSuns-style daily maxes as supplemental work. This combines the sustainability of 5/3/1 with the rapid progression of nSuns. Lift4Fit supports both programs, making it easy to switch between them or combine elements of each.
